Custom distribution installations

So you want to run a distribution that isn't on our list of supported distributions? Thats great! Just create a tar.gz or tar.bz2 image containing an installed root filesystem, place it on the web, and reimage your OS!

How should I build my archive?

First, install the distribution of your choice onto a nearby computer (physical or otherwise). Assuming you're logged into the OS you wish to copy... execute:

tar -cvpjf /mydistro.tar.bz2 --exclude=/mydistro.tar.gz --exclude=/sys --exclude=/dev --exclude=/proc /

How does one send the archive to you?

Our reimaging software will allow you to provide a URL from which a file can be downloaded. This supports user authentication for the connection, if required. We will soon offer WebDAV access for customers to upload their images. It is also possible to mail us a CD or DVD, although there will be a handling fee of $65.

Do you support OVF or AMI files?

Not at this time, but we are actively investigating the possibility of supporting these image formats!

Can I use the archives at Jailtime.org?

Technically, you can, but they're a bit difficult to translate into usable images. Do note that these images are also very infrequently updated and are not nearly as updated as the images we provide.

Can I provide my own kernel?

Yes. You must compile a kernel with support for Xen. If you provide a 32-bit kernel, it must have PAE extensions enabled.

What about FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenSolaris, and other non-Linux systems?

If you can provide a userspace and kernel which is compiled to support Xen for either x86_32p (32-bit PAE) or x86_64, we can run it.

Does it matter if I use a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system?

GrokThis.net VPS accounts support both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. It has been reported that 32-bit userspace environments can be more memory (RAM) efficient, and thus are preferable for low-memory environments. However, if you plan to scale to 4GB or greater, we recommend moving to 64-bit.
